Very honestly speaking, I had given up hope of ever getting to watch KK live! But then all of a sudden, I heard somewhere that KK would be performing in Chennai sometime in January! The only event I knew that he would have perform in, could have been IIT! As it’s the only venue in Chennai which has a large North-Indian audience, people who listen to Hindi songs!
So, a lot of phone calls and msgs later, it was finally confirmed that KK would be performing at IIT-M in their annual ‘Saarang’ fest! So now the next hurdle was getting the tickets! The ticket sales started on the 15th, and within 3 days, I had 3 chair seat tickets! By the next day, 3 had increased to 6!
I wanted to get front seats for the concert, so we reached the venue by 3:30, a good 3 hours before the concert was supposed to begin! Unfortunately, we got to know that the gates would open only after 6! AND, cameras weren’t allowed inside the venue
So after finding a place to hide our cameras (under a cactus plant, as the college wasn’t ready to take responsibility for any items), we got into the line at 5:30! The gates finally opened at 6:20, and we rushed in hoping to get front row seats! And our unruly behavior paid off, as we managed to bag the 1st row seats, in chair seat category
Nothing happened till 7:15, n the crowd had started to lose their patience! Then, a band called UDAAN came on the stage to perform the introductory act! They were going good, but then the huge (2000 approx.) audience hadn’t come to see them! So, by the time they were into their 3rd song, loud cheers of ‘We Want KK ! We Want KK !’ filled the theatre! After completing their 5th song, when the band vocalist announced that they still have 3 more songs, the audience lost all their sense of tolerance and boo-ed the band! So the band played two last songs (which the audience would have liked, had they not been eagerly awaiting KK) and went off stage!
It was already 7:50 by the time Udaan completed their act! And finally, it was time for KK to come onto the stage! I was high on excitement, and my anxiety was being seen clearly on my face (as my friend sitting next to me pointed out). I couldn’t believe that within a few minutes, I would be seeing KK in person, that too from a distance of 8-10 metres away from me! I was really missing my camera, and wished they had allowed it! But then, I had to make do with my cell! I emptied the memory card space, just in case
At 8:00 sharp, the projector showed us the introductory clipping of KK! A well-made video showing some of the biggest hits of KK, with some really nice quotes and lines about him – ‘From a small spark, emerged a mighty flame’ and ‘the spark of passion, love, achievement’ and ‘the heart of India’ ! It was overwhelming and phenomenal, and was the perfect beginning to the performance!
Soon after that, the band members entered the stage! There were huge shouts of ‘KK…KK…KK’ from the audience! The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement! And then , IT finally started! The band started playing the music of ‘Bas Ek Pal’ ! KK still hadn’t entered the stage yet ! After about a minute of the music, God’s voice finally filled the theatre – ‘Tu ek baar jo pyaar se mujhko choo le toh har zakhm bhar jayega’! KK still wasn’t on the stage, and I think I almost fainted due the numbing suspense! I could feel my legs going weak and my chest thumping! And then there he finally was, entering the stage with the lines – ‘Tere pyaar mein aise jeeye hum…’ ! And I lost my mind and didn’t hear the next 5-6 lines of the song, as I was shouting and shrieking at the top of my lungs, and waving at him! I finally managed to see him clearly, as he walked to the front of the stage, just a few metres away from me! How I wish I could have just touched the guy! I finally managed to stop my shouting once I lost my breath completely! The power and the boom in his voice were overwhelming! The whole audience was enchanted and mesmerized, as his voice pierced through the open theatre! By the time he has completed the song, I had gone into a different state altogether! It was becoming really difficult for me to realize that it was happening and I was living my dream, that it was reality and not just a dream! I called up Kuldeep immediately, so that he could listen to one of his favourite song live!
We hadn’t even got a chance to recover from the effect, when he started the next song – O Humdum Suniyo Re! The crown went ballistic, jumping wildly! I had left my chair way back and was on my feet, singing (actually shouting)! He then belted out one chartbuster after another, stopping only to crack a joke, interact with the audience and share some of his experiences! He told us that he had sprained his legs a couple of days ago, so there won’t be much jumping and dancing this time around! But honestly speaking, not for once did we feel that KK’s energy was subdued! He put a lot of energy into each song, and showed us some rocking moves on stage!
The best sight of the audience was when he was singing ‘Pal’! The 2000-odd audience was waving their hands with their mobile phones displays lit up! It was the most beautiful sight I had ever watched! KK too took notice and applauded the audience after completing the song! He said, “Main aadhi duniya ghoom chuka hoon, but what you guys did here today for this song was the most awesome thing that I have ever experienced! I am really out of words and I am moved” ! I was so so happy, that I was a part of this audience, who was responding to each and every move and song of KK !
The audience was at it best in most of the songs with ‘wooooo’ in them ! KK would stop and ask the audience to sing! And believe me, each and every member of that 2000-odd audience sang their hearts out ! Whether it was Tu hi meri shab hai, or Zara si, the crowd just involved themselves ! KK not just looked happy, he also seemed a little overwhelmed by the great response that he was getting ! I know its just my first live concert, but KK did mention that there have been very very rare concerst where the crowd involvement exceeded ours! You guys can only imagine how proud I was feeling, being a part of that audience, that won KK’s heart !
He took a 10 minute break ( he said he had been drinking a lot of water, and needed to go somewhere ) ! The 2nd part started at an even better note, as the first song he sang was – Tadap Tadap Ke! Accompanied by only the piano, KK turned the mood of the audience! Then came all the soothing tracks like Tu Aashiqui hai, Pal (which he dedicated to his friend and the director of the video – Shamim Desai), Sack keh raha hai deewana, Guzaarish, interspersed with tracks such as Kya mujhe pyaar hai, Hai junoon, Khuda jaane etc !
Then came the moment which really really rocked the audience and got them dancing wild! First it was Appadi podu ! Some students even managed to get on the stage and started dancing! KK was taken a little aback, but didn’t stop singing! They bowed to him (hailed him), and KK bowed back with a smile (a true mark of a humble star)! Within a few seconds, the security guys managed to get those guys out of the stage! And then an even better song awaited us – Uyirin uyire / Cheliya cheliya ! by now, the audience had given up all their inhibitions, and even the old ladies and gentlemen were on their feet, some dancing, some clapping, and most of them singing along (I too sang along, even though I didn’t know much of the lyrics ) ! He sand both the tamil and telegu versions simultaneously (one stanza each) ! KK seemed to have forgotten about hid sprained leg, and was giving some really killer moves (even tamil style moves) ! He did mention that it was the first time ever that he had performed Appadi podu live !
And then came the song, where we left our chair seats, went down to the standing gallery seats and danced out hearts out! The audience had become wild by now The crown was in frenzy ! The song in question? Well, none other than – Koi kahe kehta rahe ! This song went on for almost 12 minutes and the audience didn’t stop dancing for the entire length of the song ! The volunteers and a few students (approx 15-18) managed to get on the stage, danced behind KK, formed a circle around him and sang along! The sight was so overwhelming, with KK singing in the centre, surrounded by such fans who were dancing along with him on the stage (I think it must have been the first instance in a concert, where the students had managed to get on stage and dance with him)! Not for one second did KK look annoyed or tried to send them back! Infact, he looked really really pleased, and I think it gave him that extra encouragement ! Coz the moves he showed after that while singing were really great (inspite of his sprained legs) !
After completing this song, he finally asked the audience – Can I go home now? And we all shouted back – NOOOOOOOOOOO KK relented and started – Chupke se kahin, dheeme paon se… ! I think no other song could have been as perfect as Alvida to end the show! I just stood there awed, and a little sad, knowing that the show would end soon
But before he left the stage, he thanked the audience for giving him a wonderful time ! And we thanked him back for giving each of us the most wonderful 150 minutes of our lives! And he also mentioned that he would be returning again in July to perform in Chennai! That sort of cheered me up a little !
The songs he sang stayed with me all through my journey back home (we did manage to find our camera which we had hidden under a cactus plant back) ! Infact, it still is, and will stay with me for years to come! It really was a one-in-a-lifetime experience, and I m so glad that I finally managed to see him live ! Couldn’t have asked for more ! As I write this, my voice isn’t OK yet! Waiting for July now

Yep! People literally went wild when he started this song! Even the usually reticent oldies had by then left their seats, and were actually dancing without giving a hoot about how they were looking like
