Post subject:  Happy Birthday, KK...plus the interview!

Item one on my agenda: Happy birthday, you - may you rule the microphones as long as is humanly possible. Love you. *hug*

Item two: Hear about the interview, you lot? Finally – after a YEAR! – here it is!

I determined at the start to a) not act like a fangirl, b) not be random and c) be absolutely calm about the whole thing.
Be that as it may. The phone rang; I held my breath.
“Hello?” he said matter-of-factly.
I melted.
And was as fangirlish and random and not calm as could possibly be.
Well, considering it was my first attempt at interviewing anyone, and that this particular someone sounds like some kind of audio Greek god…(wow, that’s…one random analogy)…I think I did reasonably well. Course, I did make a fool of myself a couple of times, but I did not giggle.
Well, anyway.

There were the intros, he’d just been dubbing for Crook, ohmygodherememberedmyname oh no wait it was probably Subh who drummed it into him, well I hope he remembered it anyway…I told him my questions were in no particular order because I was pretty disorganized, he said ‘well, that makes two of us’ and you could HEAR him grin and gosh, how that pleased me…anyway, I decided to begin at the top of my sheet of paper and then go on to whatever came next.

So I said, “Which song did you think was the most challenging to sing?”
“Well, Har Taraf was a challenge, and then there was a track from Karthik Calling Karthik – ” (he groped for the title; I couldn't help saying “Jaane Ye Kya Hua”) – “well, you don’t really think about whether a song is challenging or not, you just sing it, I guess, though some were tough…but really all you’re thinking about is the music and the song itself…also, there’s a song from Guzaarish coming up which is rather different.” (I must’ve sounded clueless, so he supplemented the ‘Guzaarish’ with ‘Sanjay Bhansali’. Yeah, that helped.)

Then (after having vowed not to be random, I swear), I mentioned Main Khuda.
“Yeah, that was sort of long ago…rock track, lot of screaming, you guys like that track?” (enthusiastic affirmation from me) “…yeah, it was long ago, so you’ll find a raw edge to that one.” (To which I had no clue what to say, so I mentioned Ek Pal Ke Liye which is another track a lot of us love.) “Yes, that one’s a very nice track too…never got really popular though.”

So I jumped halfway down my sheet and asked him if he could name a couple of favourites out of the songs which haven’t got their due from the populace.
“Well, like you said, Ek Pal Ke Liye is one, Main Khuda…I don’t think anyone discovers songs like those other than you guys. You’re a group of…” (“diehards,” I blurted out in barely concealed glee) “…yeah, diehards.” (Wow, I swear that grin of his is AUDIBLE.) “There’s also a track called Haule Haule from a film called Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar. Sweet little song.”

Another random question from my page: “Remixes. Love them or hate them?”
“Remixes…they seem to be the popular thing to do. You can’t say really, some are good, some are not, some are trashy *laughs*. You don’t need them, but they’re trendy.”
Further prodding elicited the fact that he’d just been recording a rock version of one of the tracks in Crook.
*GLEE*

All this talk of rock versions, and I leapt at the bait.
By which I mean, I mentioned Power Ballad. Because I am Cain and I HAVE to mention Power Ballad. XD
He said his wife loves it.
Cain will say this, Ms Jyothy has good taste.
For some reason, Cain also nearly swooned right there.
‘Nuff said.

So then I (randomly) mentioned Lamhaa, and how it’s actually called Tere Bin but it seemed to revolve around the word ‘lamhaa’ so Lamhaa it is (well actually I’d called it that so I had to explain), and did that happen with any others? “Usually the title is a phrase that’s repeated often in a song, or just what the lyricist had in mind while writing it. And you liked that song?” (slightly sheepish confession on my part because I like the remix, a LOT) “oh yeah, this is one of those remixes you can really like.” I think he said something about this particular remix being ‘more effective’, but I didn’t quite catch it. “Chris Powell is an old friend of mine, so the song was basically us getting together and having a blast. It was fun.”

So which type of score inspires the greatest passion in him? I suppose that leads back to rock? “Well, yes it does. Rock gives you the freedom to let your heart out more, as do soulful songs with a high pitch that I tend to gravitate back to.” (Or some such. I’m not sure he said ‘gravitate’, that may be just my insanity.) Then I mentioned my mom saying he reminded her of the Beatles, and he said that people usually like to hear something they identify with on whatever level…and hey, he likes the Beatles too. Score, Mom. SCORE. XD

Then I spoke of the advent of English-Lyrics-In-Hindi-Songs.
“Language shouldn’t be a problem, because even in everyday life one uses that kind of Hindi-English mix. In any case, language shouldn’t matter really; it’s the music that counts.”
Why was the topic brought up anyway? As a means of leading to Cineraria, that’s why.
“Cineraria was something I did for myself. It’s a ballad, and not just a ballad; it’s more than that…” would he consider another song of that sort? “Well, if you guys like it…maybe I will, when I get to working on another album.”
Which means he hasn’t got to working on another album yet? “No, not yet. Maybe sometime. Albums don’t sell that much, you know.” (Something needs to be done about that audible grin!)

Taking off from an earlier question, which songs from Pal – other than the three best known ones – are his favourites? “Mehki Havaa has a catchy beat…and there’s one called Dil Se Mat Khel…” (Cain nearly dies in ecstasy)
And from Humsafar, other than Aasmaan Ke? “I like Rain Bhai Kaari, it’s got a Baulish feel, and of course the title track.”

Random question I thought all of us have wanted to ask at some point: That awesome hard rock version of Aap Ki Dua he does live, has he ever considered recording it? Not really, no.
“If the fans wanted it, or if I recorded a live show sometime, I might think of it, but I do think live should be different from a recording, rather than just going up there and singing what you have on the disc.”
And an insane question I’ve wanted to ask for absolutely ages: Who decided to invert the second K? (I nearly said ‘ambigram’…wow, I’m a geek…) Apparently it was at Sony Music when they were trying to decide how to stylize the cover of Pal. *wink* Also, apparently he CO-WROTE Aap Ki Dua! Gee, am I proud of this guy (which is so illogical because I haven't the right to be...wow...)

He’s often said that lyrics are very important; are there any particular lines he likes from any of his tracks? “Not particularly. Each song has its own meaning; there are bound to be lines from every track, from Tadap Tadap Ke to Aavaarapan…to Aashaaein.”
And does he have a favourite track to perform live? “That keeps on changing; there’s always an inflow of new tracks. There’s Bas Ek Pal, Khuda Jaane, Zara Si, Dil Ibaadat, MP3 (Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar), and, which is very surprising, Ding Dong.” (audible grin.)

Whereupon I told him we’re revamping the site for his birthday (and that we’re all phenomenally enthusiastic about the whole thing), and he said he’d be out of the country but he’d definitely check in.

And now to wrench oneself away…does he have a message for us diehards at themesmerizer?
“Well, I’m grateful to all of you, to Subh for founding the site; I’d never have done it for myself and it’s really nice and heartwarming that all of you are taking the time to do it…God bless all of you. You’re an exceptional group.” (audible grin)

“You’re an exceptional guy,” I said.

First thing first, hats off to you for not giggling. I would've giggled till my ribs hurt, or worse, till my cheeks hurt and I couldn't talk.

"

You’re a group of…” (“diehards,” I blurted out ...) :D

Cain is right, Ms Jyothy indeed has a very good taste. *squeel*

...and of course the title track. *nodnodnod*

"

I grinned myself mad all the way to the end reading this.
*sigh*

A job very well done Para ! And like Subh said, nice to finally have something on the KK Speaks page. :D
