Favourite Song:
Is India’s obsession with films the reason for the absence of an independent music industry?
While the West has a full-fledged music industry with stars whose popularity is as much as that of the Hollywood biggies, popular Indian music icons have to sing a different tune. In the national spectrum, why is popularity almost always measured by how frequently a singer has been able to churn out film hits or not?
Composer Shantanu Moitra says, “If I was in the ministry, I would call a national emergency for this death of non-film music.

On an international flight, the music options have a separate section dedicated to the country’s non-film music. But in India, everything begins and ends with films. It was non-film music that gave me an entry into films. Even after composing for Parineeta and Munnabhai, I’m yet to seal a deal for another Hindi non-film album post Mann Ke Manjeere! All I’m told is that there are no takers.”

Under such circumstances, the moment a singer finds an audience for a non-film album, his/her priority shifts to doing playback. Popularity soars as a singer climbs up the filmi hit charts.

“Shaan, KK etc., I believe, got caught up with making a living and reaching out to the mainstream while forgetting that it’s their pop albums that gave them their individuality. Following up consistently with more albums could have made a difference. Kailash Kher has been the most amazing of the lot. He has used his Bollywood reach and his celebrity status thereof to continue doing live acts and projects with Naresh and Paresh. But then, it can’t be one Kailash or one Sona (ahem) who will change the scene,” says singer Sona Mahapatra of Bolo Na fame.Bollywood blitzkrieg on popular media seems to be the reason for this situation which Bickram Ghosh calls a ‘travesty’ of sorts.

“If one hears, sees and reads Bollywood all the time, minds become conditioned in a certain way. I feel the media must help create a proper music industry,” says Ghosh.

Shaan, however, feels that comparing the Indian scenario with the West isn’t logical because of the differences in the number of musicals made. “We are only making musicals for Bollywood while the West functions differently. In India, the budget for non-film music videos are minuscule in comparison to what’s spent on shooting a film song. No radio station will select an anonymous non-film number and give it the required airplay to popularise it. Besides, there aren’t too many original artistes who have the drive and talent to make it big. Mediocrity, coupled with lack of vision to promote good artistes, isn’t aiding the process either,” Shaan says.
While part of the nation’s obsession with Hindi movies could be the reason behind this void, it still can’t explain why both film and non-film genres can’t exist simultaneously the way Manna De’s hits had in the golden period of music in Bengal. Even today, contestants of talent hunt shows in Bengal sing those numbers as much as they sing contemporary band and non-film Bengali numbers. Yet, switch to a national talent show and all that the children belt out are filmi numbers.

“People crack jokes in north India about how, if you walk down a street of Kolkata in the evening, strains of
children practising music waft in the air. At least that riyaaz creates a cultural consciousness, which is often absent among children elsewhere, many of who don’t have the patience to learn to appreciate non-film music. The end result is a population of over a billion that doesn’t have a music industry,” adds Moitra.

Well, I agree with Shaan that it isn't logical to compare India and the West. (But I'm still all yours, KK :D )

Film music is another way of expressing oneself. Passion is passion whether someone else wrote the lyrics or not. And songs such as Power Ballad and Dil Ibaadat Rock, for people who care (even though most don't *ahem*), have a life independent of the film they're in. There are those of us who do not attach any importance to Emraan Hashmi pouring water over a clothed Soha Ali Khan.

And for another, independent music isn't dead; it's very much alive. Perhaps Sona is saying it because no one's offered her a film song yet :D
